There is a rare earth import shortage from China.  Lighting prices will be effected in Nashville as well as everywehere.

LED replacement for the 60-watt incandescent bulb, submitted by Philips Lighting North America.

On August 3, 2011, DOE announced the first winner of the L Prize competition, an LED replacement for the 60-watt incandescent bulb, submitted by Philips Lighting North America. DOE has also received letters of intent from Lighting Science Group and GE Lighting, signaling their intention to submit entries in the 60-watt category as well. At this time DOE has closed the 60-watt category to any further letters of intent or entries beyond these three companies.

Philips takes home US$10M for their efforts, and deserves immense credit for making the bold move as quickly as they did. The qualifications were not a slouch, and while there may be a reasonable number of candidates who could have met the efficacy, color quality and business case, there was a substantially high set of hurdles to overcome to become the winner.

Philips Lighting to cut 40 Bath jobs Bath

Bath, NY — About 40 workers will soon be laid off at the Philips Lighting plant in Bath. The layoffs will begin in mid- to late August, said Philips Lighting spokeswoman Sylvie Casanova. Most of those affected are union workers, represented by the local United Steelworkers of America.

The jobs are being cut from a section of the plant that produces high-pressure sodium products used in street lights, Casanova said. Demand has dropped sharply for those type of lights, which cast a yellowish light. White lights such as LED and ceramic metal halide are now in demand, she explained. The entire high-pressure sodium product line will soon be phased out at the Bath plant.

Wattstopper and Cree Lighting at the Yazoo Brewery

A reminder that I will host a meeting Tuesday, August 2^nd with Cree Lighting and with Wattstopper available for the Nashville lighting specification community at the Yazoo Brewery.  We will be there from 5-7PM.   

In addition, Kim Shinn, LEED AP will give a lively and interactive demonstration in the use of energy modeling software and how it can be used by design teams to inform and influence early design decisions. In this interactive workshop, participants will have the opportunity to engage as members of competitive teams, experiencing first-hand the early design process.
