Samsung Reports Breakthrough in LED Technology

This is pretty cool...

"SEOUL: Researchers at South Korean electronics giant Samsung have reported a breakthrough in light-emitting diode (LED) technology that will allow production of cheaper ultra-large advanced display panels on ordinary glass, such as window panes.
Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology succeeded in fabricating nearly single crystalline Gallium Nitride (GaN) on amorphous glass substrates, a milestone that will enable production of super-sized LEDs using glass substrates, Samsung Electronics Co. said.
"In ten years, window panes will double as lighting and display screens, giving personality to buildings,"Yonhap news agency quoted a Samsung researcher who was part of the project."

Color Kinetics and the International Lighting Design Awards

Jaqua CenterThe John E Jaqua Academic Center is the newest addition to the University of Oregon campus. When designing the 40,000 square foot state-of-the-art academic learning center, the main objective was to provide a comfortable and focused learning environment for student athletes. In addition, the Center would also serve as a vehicle to celebrate alumni and student athletes and their accomplishments as well as to recruit new student athletes. Architectural firm ZGF Partnership and lighting designer Mark Godfrey of Lighting Studio at Interface Engineering Lighting worked together to create a tranquil environment for studying that connected students to the surrounding natural landscape elements and daylight as well as offered a vibrant and welcoming space.

The glass building rests on a body of water and a birch forest. The structure features a stainless steel screen wall and the two layers of glazing. Philips Color Kinetics eW Graze Powercore linear LED grazing fixtures are located within the stainless steel screen wall and these two layers of glazing, to illuminate the horizontal and vertical structure of the three-story façade with a neutral white light. From the inside, warm-toned wood surfaces glow creating a layered visual experience. The way the glass reflects on the water obscures the boundary between the building and surrounding landscape. Inside the building, Godfrey created an active and vibrant space using various Philips Color Kinetics LED lighting fixtures, including iColor Accent Powercore (now specified using iColor Accent MX Powercore), iColor Cove MX Powercore, and ColorGraze Powercore.

LED lighting supported the sustainable design goals of the project, and also provided the required intensity of light. Godfrey comments, "We really needed lighting systems with more focused intensity than traditional luminaire choices. Fluorescent and ceramic metal halide do not provide the combination of smooth linear focused intensity that lighting LED provides."

This project received a Special Citation for Layered Visual Façade Lighting Expressing Visual Depth in the IALD International Lighting Design Awards
