Circadian Rhythms and Lighting

I met with Deborah Burnett yesterday afternoon here in Nashville to discuss a couple of projects.  She is an expert on lighting related to circadian rythms which should be considered an important role in lighting medical facilities and lighting for schools to help school children increase performance.

Cree LED, visit from President Obama

To the Republicans in my network, please forgive the reference.  I am, however, excited to be the manufacturer's representative for Cree LED Lighting in Nashville.  President Obama visited the Cree LED factory yesterday and reported:

“Today the small business that a group of N.C. State engineering students founded almost 25 years ago is a global company.  It’s got 5,000 employees.  Next month, your new production line will begin running 24/7.  And soon you’ll add another 400,000 square feet of space on a new site next door.  So you’re helping to lead a clean energy revolution.  You’re helping lead the comeback of American manufacturing.  This is a company where the future will be won.”

And this is what the new architectural troffer looks like (step dimming LED included):

Street and Area Lighting for Municipalities

Cities are starting to consider LED lighting as a viable light source.  Here is what Lumec Lighting says are the benefits:

1. LEDs consume less energy for the same lumen output
It is a proven and tested fact. LED luminaires will run at a lower system wattage than a comparable HID fixture, but with an equal or higher light output. Furthermore, the light is precisely oriented and little or none is wasted. You save so much energy that the switch will pay for itself.
2. LEDs offer better uniformity and light quality
The uniform white light of LED luminaires enhances color rendition and facilitates facial recognition. This means the public spaces are much more inviting and comfortable for everyone.
3. LED luminaires require much less maintenance
With systems such as our LifeLED™ made to last over 70,000 hours, there’s no more frequent re-lamping and high maintenance costs. Our LED technology is reliable and dependable, and our luminaires are designed to dissipate heat and to withstand the harshest weather conditions. Once installed, it will be years before they need any servicing.
4. LED can stimulate the economy of your city
Investors and citizens are getting more and more sensible to environmental issues. When the streets are safe, when the storefronts are well-lit, and when a city uses technologies that project a green and responsible image, people will pour in.
5. LED luminaires are available in a wide variety of design
We went way beyond the purely functional luminaires and created an impressive range of different styles. Our LifeLED™ engine can be integrated into many of our fixtures, from the more traditional to the more futuristic. No matter what ambiance you wish to create, it can be done with LEDs.

The future of the incandescent

Today's posting is centered on an interesting article featured in the Sunday, 5 June 2011 edition of the New York Times Magazine about the future—or lack thereof—of the incandescent bulb. You can read up on what this article is all about, or you can check it out for yourself by following this link: "Bulb In, Bulb Out."

Interesting Article on LED lighting controls

Below is a quote from the article.  Neat stuff with remote LED drivers with dimming and monitoring control for your LEED projects.  I spoke with a local electrical contractor here in Nashville who would budget $2/ft for high voltage conduit and wire and $.75 for low voltage plenum like is shown here!  Payback periods are coming down drastically.

"Lighting may not seem a sexy frontier of disruptive innovation -- particularly when compared with the electric car. But after struggling for years as cleantech's overlooked stepchild, lighting has emerged as a robust and fast-growing cleantech sector."
