Bad Cove Lighting
This is a to be unnamed restaurant that Jen, Caleb, and I frequent after church on Sundays. I think this is a bad example of cove lighting and there are three possible solutions that I will show.
So the line on the ceiling is a bit uneven and odd looking. Of course I make a living doing this but the pattern was distracting to me. I could not see into the cove but suspect that this is a staggered strip. Three ideas that would have made this a better cove lighting job:
1. Increase the depth of the cove. The greater depth would allow for more dispersion and the pattern would be further in to the middle of the the ceiling.
2. Use linear LEDs. This is a more expensive option, at least in initial cost, but an LED with a narrow, elliptical distribution would not have this issue and with an adjustable mounting bracket could push the light in to the middle which is desirable. Here is an example of such a fixture: Beghelli Spyder
3. Use the new seemless lamps. This would give uniformity but would not kick the light to the middle of the ceiling. This would be better than the current solution but not the best in a good, better, best scenario.

Light Meter App
This is a great app for lighting people or if you want to show an owner what footcandles are in a space. A Light Meter app! I tested against a "real" light meter from Greenlee at showed 22 FC at my desk. The whitegood light meter showed 18 so not completely accurate but I had a case on my phone, etc. It works as a good estimate of light quantity. Search "whitegoods" at iTunes.
That is me and my son Caleb at Stone Fort park in Manchester TN in the background.
From the whitegoods site:
New Update Available for Whitegoods Light Meter App
Whitegoods have made further improvements to their recently launched LightMeter App;
The new updates include:
-An easy to use manual calibration tool where you can input readings taken from a real light
meter allowing for more accurate calibration.
- We have improved the decimalisation of Lux/foot-candle readings
-Default settings for low/medium or bright light levels to improve performance
-'How does it work' section on Info tab
-Settings for foot-candles or lux
Always have a light meter at hand with this intuitive and easy-to-use app. Compatible with iPhone 3GS,
4 and 4S, iPad and iPod Touch (iOS 5.0 or later). Works with front and back cameras and includes a built-in timer.

What is a Lighting Manufacturers' Representative?
This is a good definition by our folks at Sesco Lighting:
Some manufacturers choose not to employ their own sales force. Instead they contract exclusively, in certain geographic areas, with reps who are paid a commission when they are successful in selling the manufacturer's product. A manufacturers' rep may represent many companies, usually does limited invoicing and carries little or no accounts receivable. The use of manufacturers' reps in the lighting industry is the norm rather than the exception.

Energy Audits for Nashville
| Let me know if you need an energy audit for lighting and/or lighting controls system in the Nashville area. I am happy to assist with Mike (info below). -Shad Asebrook 615-830-1655 SAsebrook@SescoLighting.com Sesco Energy Division Link Energy Division |
Environmental Mission Statement
|
As the leading manufacturers' representative in the lighting industry, we will work diligently to arouse and educate as many people as possible - within our company and outside - inviting all to join us in a meaningful and significant effort to renew our environment and sustain our planet.
|
Rising electrical costs across the U.S. are a great concern for multi-site facility owners. The deregulation process on the supply side has failed in states that once considered this the solution of “choice.” Other states that formerly enjoyed low electrical costs are now feeling the impact. The end result for all consumers is a direct hit to the bottom line. These supply-side challenges are leading customers to pursue alternate Demand Side Management (DSM) disciplines.
The good news is that timing has never been better to counteract these rising electrical costs. SESCO Lighting’s Energy Solutions Program provides a comprehensive package of products, expertise and services for your commercial and industrial facilities. We’re able to replace your older, inefficient lighting with new energy-efficient lighting systems and controls. This means of energy conservation is the quickest return on investment compared to all other DSM saving disciplines, including HVAC systems, Building Envelope Measures and even Water Conservation. In addition, SESCO integrates the Federal Government’s “2005 Energy Policy Act” (as amended and extended by Congress October 3, 2008) when addressing your new lighting system. With adherence to specific ASHRAE guidelines, this congressionally implemented policy potentially allows customers to deduct the total cost of energy conservation measures in one fiscal year. Implementation of the above must occur prior to December 31, 2013. SESCO Lighting will not only align the most appropriate lighting system(s) for the specific application, but with a commitment to SESCO product, there is no charge for traditional project management fees. SESCO will help reduce operational costs and secure the type of financial return on investment that your management teams will embrace. We strive to implement technologies that reduce operational costs while improving light levels and associated comforts. We don’t stop there. We urge our customers to evaluate controlling these new loads with sensor technology or more advanced electronic-based controls. The technology is available and SESCO Lighting’s family of services is looking forward to introducing it to you. | |
For more information on how you and your company can go green, contact our Energy Specialist, Mike Siner. |

Cree Lighting CR24 Troffer
The R9 Value for the 3000K Cree CR24 is 80 which adds to the
industry leading CRI of +90. A link to
the energy study is below.

Energy.Gov Study
Per the DOE website,
"A good CRI score does not guarantee good color quality
One problem with the CRI is that it can give fairly high scores to sources that render some saturated object colors very poorly. An example below shows a case of a red-green-blue (RGB) white LED simulation optimized for highest luminous efficacy of radiation (LER, lm/W) at CRI R
a=80. This light would qualify for Energy Star and achieve high luminous efficacy2, but the actual color rendering is very poor. With R9 = -114, skin tones under this light look pale and unhealthy. "
