Light Meter App

This is a great app for lighting people or if you want to show an owner what footcandles are in a space.  A Light Meter app!  I tested against a "real" light meter from Greenlee at showed 22 FC at my desk.  The whitegood light meter showed 18 so not completely accurate but I had a case on my phone, etc.  It works as a good estimate of light quantity.  Search "whitegoods" at iTunes.

Starting next week the block of 5th Avenue North, between Church and Union Streets, will get a makeover that will highlight the area as an arts district.

This is being designed by Hawkins Partners landscape architects.  Great project.  I am supplying the catenary fixture and the LED curtain lighting.

Color Kinetics at the Nashville Bridge Company

This is the Nabrico Building in the Cumberland Park area, Nashville.  The blue tower is lighted by Philips Color Kinetics (CK) LEDs.

• The emergency components are completely integral to the luminaire.
• Emergency lighting is provided for a 90 minute period in the event of power loss.
• The 121-EM is suitable for use in ambient temperature conditions from 40°C (104°F) maximum to -10°C (14°F) minimum.
• Available wattages include 35 watt and 50 watt.
• In order to provide speed to market, the 121-EM is based on 121 generation 1 technology. It is available with Wide Throw (WT), Forward Throw (FT) and Medium Throw (MT) optics. Note: luminaires with MT optics include a diffuse lens.
• 121-EM with FT and WT optics are provided with a clear glass lens for a similar outward appearance to the recently announced 121-Generation 2 sconce family.
• 121-EM sconces with MT optics are provided with a diffuse lens. For a similar outward appearance, simply specify the DL (diffuse lens) option on 121-Generation 2 luminaires for a closer match to the 121-EM with MT optics.

Each 121-EM wall sconce includes a combination indicator light and test switch located in the door frame center, near the wall.

The U.S. Department of Energy is giving the 'thumbs up' on 41 new Lighting Facts labels for B-K Lighting solid-state products including the Mini Micro™ Floodlight, Mini Micro™ Pathlight, Mini Micro™ Pendant, Chart Star™ and Yacht Star™.

Each Lighting Facts label summarizes a fixture’s solid-state performance data in five areas — lumens, efficacy, watts, correlated color temperature (CCT), and color rendering index (CRI)- as measured by the industry standard for testing photometric performance, IES LM-79-2008.

Once approved, each registered product is issued a Lighting Facts label.

Just like nutritional labels issued for food products, Lighting Facts labels give lighting professionals and designers direct access to information and facts needed to review performance claims.

Since becoming a partner in 2009, B-K Lighting has registered close to 200 products with the D.O.E. SSL Quality Advocates Program and is ranked as one of the top manufacturers worldwide.
That number will continue to grow as additional products are approved.

Outdoor LED Cable Lighting from Sistemalux

This is a neat fixture from Sistemalux/Igguzini that architects and landscape architects may find interesting.  I would love to see this on a streetscape here in Nashville.

Qtran Transformer Benefits

Here is a video that may be of interest to landscape architects and electrical engineers.  The video discussed transformer noise, light loss for low voltage lamps, and lamp life.  This is a good explanation of transformers and worth the 7 minutes.

BK Lighting, Adjustable Output and Beam Distribution

This is a great technology offering from BK Lighting LED.  Without a typical dimmer, the light levels of their LED fixtures can be adjusted in the field.  Here are some pictures showing the different effects at levels 1, 5, and 9.  These are great for landscape lighting and come in fixtures for uplighting trees, path lighting, in-grade fixtures, sign lighting, and step lighting.  Here is a link to the website.

B-K Lighting L.O.C.K. Knuckle™ Out Performs the Competition

For those Nashville lighting specifiers and landscape architects in particular, this is a real strength of BK Lighting.  The locking knuckle mechanism allows for aiming of the fixture that has a better chance of remaining in place.  Here is a link to a cool video showing the capability.
